Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is a winter visitor and local resident in Gujarat (India). Found in shallow lakes, mudflats and salt plains.
Identification: Size 125-145 cm. Wingspan: 55 inches. Sexes similar.
Large, long-legged wader with a long neck. Pink legs and feet. Black
primaries and secondaries. Holds neck extended in flight. Adult birds have a
dark pink plumage and hooked, pink bill with black tip. Immature birds have
pale pink and gray plumage and hooked, light bill with black tip. |
